Week 25: What Makes a Good First Impression?

Like it or not, research shows that most people make a first impression judgement in the first few seconds.

They do this based on:

  • how you behave when you meet them

  • your body language

  • what you say

  • how you respond

1. In this video, an expert explains how to make a good impression. Watch it, then discuss as a group.

2. Now watch this next video clip of two different people meeting a woman about a job.

  • What are your impressions of both?

  • Note down all the signals that the second person is giving to the woman in the video

3. Think about what signals do you give out when you meet someone for the first time?

The Golden Rules of First Impressions

  • Eye contact

  • Straight body

  • Nice firm hand shake

  • Wait to be asked to sit

  • Smile

  • Respond pleasantly and with eye contact

4. In pairs, take turns in a mock interview situation, with one of you as the employer and other as the person turning up for an interview.

5. As a group discuss how easy or hard it is to make a good first impression.
