WEST Skills Screening and Diagnostics

Every learner needs to do a literacy (English) and numeracy (Maths) screening at the start of their course. This will help you to understand what things you need to work on to improve your literacy and numeracy. It will also help your PT and class teachers know if you need any extra help, and what kind of literacy and numeracy topics you are likely to need support with.

WEST stands for Wales Essential Skills Toolkit.

It’s also important you understand this is not a test and you can’t pass or fail.  You will be assessed on your literacy and numeracy skills.  You can do the numeracy skills assessment in Welsh if you prefer.

Each assessment has about 40-50 questions. You are allowed to take as long as you need to complete the assessment, so when answering each question take your time. If you do not know the answer, stay calm and go onto the next question. If you need to stop, click the signout button and speak to your tutor.

 What happens next?

Once you have completed an assessment, WEST will create a skills profile that will help us to understand how you learn.  Your tutorwill discuss your skills profile with you to ensure you get the right support.

Learning Plan

WEST will also  provide you with your own online Learning plan. Each Learning plan will create a set of learning activities specially selected to help you to improve your core skills. These online activities can be accessed anytime, from any device with an internet connection.

Sign-in

Your tutor will arrange for you to sit the assessments and help you sign-in for the first time. They will also help you change your password  - choose a password you will remember, but not something anyone can guess. If you do forget your password you can change it on WEST sign-in screen.
