 INDUCTION DAY

The purpose of induction day is to make students feel comfortable with and connected to College physically and virtually.

They should leave knowing where they will be going on their first full day of lessons, and have some new friends who they can meet up with.

Useful things to have/ know for Induction:

  • Chromebooks or access to IT for part of the day

  • Timetables and student ID cards

  • Code of conduct

  • How students can connect to Eduroam wifi

  • How to download the Cambria app, and about the Student facebook page

  • Details of things students will need for their course and to take notes

  • Access to their ILPs

  • Access to Moodle and some knowledge of digital badges

Croeso Activities

Make sure that all learners know the basics.

  • Your name and contact details

  • The room number you are in and how rooms and blocks are named

  • Where basic things they need are - food, toilets, break areas, main areas where they will be studying, library, student services

  • What to do and where to go if there is a fire alarm

  • How to contact the College if they are unable to come to class (new online method via the app). If learners are not in class, they will probably receive a text if they haven't reported their absence in the first 15 minutes after class begins. This text reminds them that they need to be in class. Attendance is carefully and closely monitored. It is really important that all learners attend all their sessions if they wish to do well and to pass their course.

  • The role of the Personal Tutor - how often you all meet (weekly) and how you will support your learners to achieve through helping them set and monitor learning targets, widening their horizons and getting them to achieve beyond what they initially expected, focussing them on long term achievement goals and coaching them to achieve and overcome any barriers to learning.

Meet Us Activities

These can be done through the day and can be any icebreakers you want to use. Here are some examples, categorised under first icebreakers to get to know each other, and then a second set to find out a little more about each other.

First icebreakers

Get Connected Activities

In this section of the day we need all learners to be able to:

  • get onto College systems

  • have their student cards and timetables ( any issues to be sorted via Student Services)

  • check their personal details are accurate and update these in their student Proportal Account

We also need all personal tutors to ensure:

1. Group lists - the names of students need to be checked

2. Student records and qualifications - each student checks their records to make sure that all their details are correct and all qualifications are included. They may need to visit Student Services if there is a problem or they need to show evidence of exam certificates.

College Wifi

Details of how students can get onto Eduroam are found here:

https://eduroam.cambria.ac.uk/?page_id=2

EBS On Track ILPs

It would be helpful if all students could log on in Induction (or in the first week of term) and check their details in On Track.

Logging On to College Computers

Student user name: Student ID number on ID card

Password: three letters on ID card, plus date of birth (e.g. twd25/08/1998)

Logging On to Google

User name: email address on Student ID card

Password: as above

Student Code of Conduct and Equality and Diversity

Make sure that all learners at College understand the student code of conduct. At this point you may also like to explore what is and isn't acceptable behaviour at College, and get students involved in discussing good and bad behaviours for learning and the difference between school and college.

All learners are expected to:

  • Attend all personal tutorial sessions. Attendance is compulsory and monitored.

  • Be punctual

  • Be prepared to honestly discuss your progress

  • Be prepared to talk to your tutor about issues which may be affecting your College life as soon as they arise

  • Take part in tutorial activities

Learners need to understand that their personal tutor will have to comment on these things in any reference required for employment or further learning.

This would also be a good time to explore the equality and diversity charter and get students to consider what it means to them as students, and what the College expects of them in their treatment of others.

Find Out More Activities

In this section, we ask you to get learners finding out more about each other and also for you to find out about them. You wil start off with some more icebreakers to get learners finding out more about each other. There is a choice of these below, but feel free to find your own.

Then you will move into Proportal.

Building Aspirations

In this section of induction, please do talk to learners about where the course can lead to. Bring in information about ex students and their progress and the types of careers and courses that learners can go on to if they do well in the course. Talk about expectations and what makes effective learners. Try to find out more about what each learner in your class would like to do and try to get them to think big and believe that they can achieve if they work hard and try to achieve.

Barriers to Learning

Discuss what could be the main barriers to achieving. These include work related and personal and social barriers. Explain about how Student Services and Study Skills can help learners.

  • Student Services - offering support on a range of issues from transport, finances, housing, health, sexual health, counselling and many other things, including any bullying or safeguarding issues which they wish to discuss.

  • Study Skills - support and help with learning for learners with their studying. Support is available for all learners and especially those with identified support needs, including dyslexia. If students haven't already identified their needs and disclose this, please email Lizzie Stevens.

Learner ILP

If you can get chromebooks or access to a computer, this is an ideal time for students to begin to complete all the elements of their Learner ILP. We need them to understand what they can see on their ILP including their attendance and their targets. You need to be able to explain how they can keep a track of their learning and to set targets for themselves. Teachers will also be using their version of the tool to set targets for learners and monitor their progresss. Teachers can use the tool to add comments, both positive and concerns and to write reports. Records of one to one meetings will be in here too.

All learners need to consider the following, and have completed their learner ILP by week 3:

  • Previous achievements and hope for this course

  • Goals

  • Strengths and Development

  • Plans after their course

  • Write their first SMART target

By week three targets in this section should be completed relating to their initial diagnostic assessments in literacy and numeracy.

Explore Activities

This is the final part of Induction Day and in this learners will learn more about what they can access beyond just their classes.

Use the time to explore the site, to talk about the clubs, activities and groups they can join on the site. The app has a calendar of what's on and there will be advertised Activities fests through the first few weeks on each site advertising clubs and events.

Get all learners who use facebook to like our Cambria+ site.

This is the website which we use to share all information for students about events, activities and opportunities.

Digital Badges

Learn more about digital badges and have a go at getting a digital badge. Digital badges will be used at College for rewarding attendance, progress and effort. They will earn badges if they are class reps and if they undertake sporting activities at the College. We can also award outstanding student awards for a range of things. Once learners create their digital back pack to store the badges, they can be then transferred onto electronic sites and used for digital CVs.

Digital badges are also used to help students pursue their learning and interest across a wider range of activities. The College has created digital badges to reward CLIF activities and enrichment, to help learners learn more about preparing for university, to help them to become bloggers and learn digital media skills. Have a look for yourself, and if you are interested in this, why not take up the challenge and earn your own staff digital badge:
