Personal tutoring is one of the most important elements of our learning process.

As a personal tutor, your role is to coach each of your learners to achieve their potential. To do this, as a personal tutor your role is help them become independent and effective learners. You will be working with them to set long term goals and helping them to learn how to develop and monitor their own short term actions to improve. You will be monitoring their progress in all their skills development, including literacy and numeracy, and wider employability skills.

As a personal tutor you will guide your learners to independent learning online and any specialist additional support your learners may need.

KEY FEATURES OF A PERSONAL TUTOR

To provide effective tutorial support

Personal Tutors need to be:

  • APPROACHABLE AND FRIENDLY.  A warm attitude to a student encourages informal discussion and honest exchange.

  • FOCUSSED ON PROBLEM SOLVING. Difficulties should not be ignored in an effort to keep good relations. If a student is not progressing this must be tackled in a non-critical way, focusing on the behaviour or performance, not the student.

  • ABLE TO TAKE ACCOUNT OF THE WHOLE PERSON. Academic progress must be balanced with other aspects of the student's life. Personal Tutors may need to meet parents, guardians, employers or social workers in the course of their work, so tact and diplomacy will also be needed.

  • CONFIDENTIALITY WITH STUDENTS’ PERSONAL DISCUSSIONS. Personal Tutors should only discuss issues relating to students on a need to know basis.
