ACTIVITIES

Term 1 - October

Week 5: Blockers

MAKING THE TRANSITION FROM GCSE TO A LEVEL

Identifying your Blockers

Aim of the session:

This session is intended to identify where studying can go wrong for you, and put in place some solutions that may help.

A) Identifying Deliberate “Blockers”

TASK Write down 3 things that from your  experience so far, you think prevents you from learning.

B) The Solution- Identifying the 3 Rs of Habit and Making Effort a Habit

The argument goes that there are three elements to good habit formation – referred to as the three Rs.  These are:

  • Reminder – you should choose a trigger to remind you when you should work- you choose a trigger attached to something that happens to you every day.  “At the start of a free period I will…” or “An hour after I arrive home I will…”

  • Routine-  Choose a routine that is easy to achieve for example it might be to sort out notes for 30 minutes each week. The key thing is this: in the beginning, performance doesn’t matter  Routine matters.

  • Reward – you should find a reward to give yourself if you stick to Reminder and Routine each week.

C) The obvious solution – sort out your notes

Having an organised file is essential for success. Your PT will now ask everyone in the room to put one of their subject files on their desk. Walk around the room and look at every file.

Who is the most organised ?

Why ?

Be like that person, because they will probably achieve the higher grades at A Level
