ACTIVITIES

Term 1- September

Week 4:  Learning From Mistakes and Feeding Forward

Aim of the session: The aim of the session is to give you an opportunity to recognise and reflect on mistakes and to realise that mistakes create a learning opportunity.

What kind of mistakes are there?

Professor James Reason of the University of Manchester has carried out a lot of research on making mistakes. This research shows that:-

If you want to speed up how quickly you can improve in a skill, you must do the following:

  • Make mistakes.  This may sound obvious, but some people fear making mistakes so they avoid doing tasks.  If a piece of work is difficult, and they are likely to make lots of mistakes, they copy someone else’s, or ‘forget’ to hand it in.  You must make the mistakes so you can learn from them.

  • Once the error is made, look at it.  Mistakes are information.  Don’t ignore them, or hide them, or quickly correct them.  Study them.

  • Next, consider what kind of mistake you have made.  Work out why it happened.  Professor Reason argues there are three broad reasons for error:

You will notice in all three types of mistake part of the solution lies in taking note of feedback given. It is very important that you make a note of feedback from tutors in your subjects and use it to set yourself targets for improvement.

    Learning From Mistakes Guidance

  • Accepting responsibility makes learning possible.

  • You can't change mistakes, but you can choose how to respond to them.

  • Work to understand why it happened and what the factors were.

  • What information could have avoided the mistake?

  • What small mistakes, in sequence, contributed to the bigger mistake?

  • Are there alternatives you should have considered but did not?

  • What feedback were you given?

  • What kinds of changes are required to avoid making this mistake again? What kinds of change are difficult for you?

  • How do you think your behaviour should/would change in you were in a similar situation again?

Task:

In small groups or pairs use the guidance above and think of a mistake that you have made recently. What kind of mistake was it? Try to describe it as specifically as you can and work out what you have learned from it. Feedback to the rest of your group on what your reflections are.

Reviewing our E&D Promises

In Induction we showed you our Equality and Diversity Charter. We are very serious about trying to make Coleg Cambria a place where everyone feels welcome and safe.

Look at the Charter again and discuss how you feel about the things mentioned?
