Right Choice Review

If you leave College without finishing the course, we have all failed,  so you need to make sure this is the right course, you are happy  and you have the help you need to do well:

  • Are you happy with your course?

  • How will it help you to get to your chosen job / career?

  • What more help do you need to get you to your chosen job / career?

  • What more things do you need to do to help you get to your chosen job/ career?

  • What more help do you need to build important skills, like reading, writing and maths skills?

Skills for Learning

Level 3 Learning

In this unit you will learn about some important skills for learning. Level 3 study develops you to become an independent learner.

By the end of Level 3 you should be able to:

  • study and research independently, making effective notes by scanning and skimming texts

  • find key information easily and to use this to put together your own arguments and ideas about the topic you are studying

  • problem solve and to use evaluation skills to weigh things up and to develop your own solutions and ideas

To get really good at these skills there are some study tips you need to learn along the way in this google site:

Study Smarter

Get Organised

Paper based note taking

At College you need to keep files and papers organised. Working on loose paper can lead to disorganised notes, so:

  • Have a working file for current notes to use at College, and have a large subject file at home to move your notes to and keep in order. Use dividers to keep your subjects and topics separate.

  • Writing up your notes neatly at the end of the day is a great way to review and reflect on what you've learned and at this point you can add in extra reading and research.

  • Use the Cornell note taking system to organise your notes.

1. Look at the Cornell system by clicking on the button here:

Computer based note taking

Most university students use a chrome book, small laptop or tablet to take their daily notes. If you have a device, why not bring it with you to College? The College has wifi on all sites and most lessons will use technology. Remember, if you do bring your device, it is your responsibility to keep it safe, but it's probably lighter than carrying heavy files. Use this Cornell note taking template to help you:

Great note taking apps include:

 Evernote

Manage Your Time Effectively

Most Level 3 courses have time built in for students to do independent study. How you manage this could make the difference in your grades. What ways could you manage your time?

Learn Together

All the research shows that learning together is THE most powerful learning tool to help you learn. There are lots of ways that you can learn together. Consider ways you could do this.

ILP Target Setting

You should now have done your initial diagnostic assessments in literacy and numeracy.

Use these with your tutor to set at least one literacy and one numeracy target for you to work on in the next few weeks in your ILP.

Once you have achieved these you can mark as complete and show your personal tutor.

Can you also add a target about how you could learn better in class and get more out of lessons?
